The Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB), in partnership with Green Lighting Corp. (GLC) is already in the process of retrofitting streetlights within the FAB from conventional sodium lights to Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology in an effort to become more energy efficient and sustainable.

With this initiative, the FAB shall be the first Freeport zone in the country to install LED streetlights in their respective area.

LEDs or Light-Emitting Diodes produce the most energy-efficient and longest-lasting lighting available today. LEDs run cooler than incandescent or halogen bulbs, which greatly increase their longevity – LEDs can last up to 50,000 hours which is 42 times longer than incandescent bulbs or 13 times longer than halogen bulbs. LEDs also consume the least power as compared to other lighting technologies – 80 percent less than incandescent bulbs and 75 percent less than halogen bulbs.

Moreover, a switch to LED street lighting system is a cost-effective and sustainable choice as it could greatly decrease energy consumption, maintenance intensity and overall financial expenditure saving end-user an average of sixty (60) percent in energy costs.

HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOU?

Public Safety

In addition to the benefits of LEDs in general terms, these streetlights are especially advantageous in terms of safety and security as they provide a more clear and illuminated vision than traditional streetlights, therefore improving conditions for pedestrians drastically. Well-lit streets enhance people's perception of their safety, allowing them to be more comfortable walking the streets at night.

Road Safety

Improved streetlights help ensure safe movement of traffic for vehicles reducing the number of vehicular accidents due to better peripheral vision. Also, it allows law enforcement to be more effective as facial and vehicle recognition is easier for police officers and the general public.

The conversion of FAB streetlights is an important step towards the realization of AFAB’s efforts in continuous building of resilient infrastructures, promoting sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation in favor of all its stakeholders.

The project is now 60% complete and continuous improvements shall be applied in the process to ensure its stability and longevity.
